A Partnership Decades in the Making: TMG Manufacturing and Yanmar Industrial Engines

TMG Case Study features TMG STR-155 SPT Drill Rig

TMG Manufacturing of Tampa, Florida, knows something about commitment. A manufacturer of geotechnical and engineering drilling products, rigs, tooling, and equipment, the company builds an extensive line of equipment needed for geotechnical soil investigation and foundation and soil stabilization. Its clients, primarily geotechnical and drilling engineers and foundation construction and soil stabilization companies, need reliable equipment that works every time in all types of environments. Its customers rely on it, as do the companies who need to complete projects on time.

From Exhibition Floor to Engine Choice: Finding Yanmar

CEO Niel Bloomfield started TMG Manufacturing in 2002, where he began building foundation equipment for the sinkhole industry in Florida. As a new small business owner, back then, he had a lot to learn. Handy and experienced in machining, he began with a request to build a single rig that could fit inside an existing building.

Bloomfield knew that the right engine was one of the most critical choices for any equipment. When deciding the components for that first rig, he attended a tradeshow to research engine options. There, he met reps from multiple engine makers, including Yanmar.

“At the time, I was a small OEM, just starting and figuring our way through the industry,” said Bloomfield. “While all of the other engine companies wanted to discuss larger volumes of engines to purchase and wouldn’t give me the time of day, Yanmar was open to helping me and didn’t care if I bought only one engine. They were very supportive, educating me on the process and their products and options. That was my introduction to Yanmar.”

For that first rig, he decided to purchase a Yanmar engine and take the leap. After the purchase, Bloomfield recalled the level of service. “The Yanmar team came out to our facility where we built our first rig, hooked up the sensors, and confirmed we were good to go,” said Bloomfield. “That experience galvanized my decision to choose Yanmar in those early days.”

Yanmar Support TMG’s International Expansion

Fast-forward more than two decades, and Bloomfield and TMG Manufacturing have an international business that continues to grow. To support its growth, the company operates a 20,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Tampa, Florida, and a second facility in Costa Rica to better support its customers in Latin America. The facility is equipped to manufacture and fabricate a variety of products for the geotechnical industry, including compaction grouting drill rigs, Standard Penetration Test (SPT) and Cone Penetration Test (CPT) soil testing drill rigs, compaction grouting equipment and products, and much more.

After Yanmar’s impression on Bloomfield, TMG Manufacturing has since equipped most of its drilling rigs with Yanmar. While grateful for the opportunity for Yanmar to work with him in those early days, Bloomfield’s choice of Yanmar boils down to two things – quality and reliability.

“I love the engines,” exclaimed Bloomfield. “Their engines work — they just run. And over the years, we have heard this consistently from our customers.”

TMG Offerings with Yanmar Diesel Engines

TMG Manufacturing’s drill rigs include Yanmar’s tier-4 compliant, turbo-charged diesel engines in 38-, 55-, and 72 horsepower, depending on the equipment size. For instance, the TMG Manufacturing STR 155 rig SPT soil investigation drill rigs for geotechnical engineering and soil testing at depths of up to 500 feet include a Yanmar 4TNV98C diesel engine.

Additionally, the company introduced a new line of multi-purpose crossover rigs that allow owners to perform multiple functions with one rig, including SPT, CPT, wireline coring, and rotary drilling. The TMG CSR-174 multi-purpose drill rig with a 72-hp Yanmar 4TNV98CT-NVT diesel performs multiple functions, potentially on the same job site with the same crew on only one rig.

TMG has built a solid business behind its quality and reliable products, much of it powered by Yanmar engines. Today, because of the company’s reputation for quality, Bloomfield receives orders from companies worldwide. One company recently purchased a drilling rig at a large rail construction project overseas. They needed a machine urgently, and TMG delivered a rig equipped with a Yanmar engine. ‘‘A few months later, they ordered three more rigs because they said our rig had logged more drilling hours than any other machine on their projects, and they told me they had every machine out there in use today,” Bloomfield added.

In more than twenty years of operation, Bloomfield said he hasn’t had a single engine failure, nor has he had to replace a customer’s Yanmar engine, where they had done routine maintenance on the respective engines. That early commitment and that type of reliability are just a few of the main reasons Bloomfield keeps coming back to Yanmar.
