The Yanmar 4TN107 Diesel Engine: Six-Cylinder Power in a Four-Cylinder Package for Off-Road

4TN107 - six-cylinder power in a four-cylinder package

When it comes to powering off-road machinery, choosing the right diesel engine can make all the difference between a project that runs smoothly and one that faces constant downtime and inefficiency.

Yanmar recognized this challenge when it developed the 4TN107 as a comprehensive solution that doesn’t force customers to compromise between power and environmental responsibility. Whether operating construction equipment, agricultural machinery, or material-handling vehicles, the 4TN107 stands out by delivering up to 208 horsepower while meeting the most stringent environmental regulations–it’s six-cylinder power in a four-cylinder package.

Configurations and Power Options

This 4.6-liter, four-cylinder diesel engine meets rigorous European Union (EU) Stage V and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 emission regulations without sacrificing the performance characteristics that off-road operators depend on. The 4TN107FTT-1SYA2 offers up to 208hp at 2200 rpm while the 4TN107FHT-1SYA2 features 147hp at 2200rpm. The overall design concept was to achieve a low total cost of ownership and low fuel consumption, but with high power density and a compact after treatment system. For example, the 147hp (110kW) version features a rated speed/load fuel consumption of 7.6 gal/h. This represents leading fuel efficiency compared to other engines in the four-liter, off-road engine class.

Advanced Combustion Technology for Superior Efficiency

This combustion chamber design works in conjunction with a high-pressure common rail fuel injection system capable of delivering fuel at pressures up to 2,000 bar. The combination of the stepped-bowl design and high-pressure injection creates optimal conditions for fuel atomization and vaporization, resulting in more complete combustion and improved efficiency.

10% less fuel consumptionThe result is fuel consumption reductions of approximately 10 percent compared to similar engines in this output class, helping customers significantly reduce lifecycle operating costs.

Advanced Turbocharging

The engine is available in two configurations to meet different power requirements: a single turbocharger system for applications requiring up to 110 kW, and a two-stage turbocharging system for higher power outputs up to 155 kW. Waste-gate type turbochargers were chosen to deliver proven reliability and cost efficiency, making them well-suited for demanding off-road use.

High power density - 34kW/LThe two-stage turbocharging system represents a particularly sophisticated approach to achieving high power density. This system addresses turbo lag issues, and uses two different types of turbochargers connected in series, ensuring that sufficient air is drawn in to meet the demands of high-performance combustion. The smaller turbocharger provides quick response during sudden load changes, while the larger turbocharger delivers the air volume needed for sustained high-power output.

Outstanding Torque at 805 Nm
The result is an engine that generates peak torque of 805Nm at 1500 rpm in the two-stage configuration, delivering the outstanding torque characteristics needed across a wide range of off-road applications.

Engineered for Reliability and Durability

To achieve greater reliability and durability to deliver lasting value in demanding off-road environments, the 4TN107 is designed to be heavier than typical on-road engines, including a closed-deck cylinder block with high stiffness. Correspondingly, the cylinder head is also designed for greater stiffness. Despite the heavier design, low-fuel consumption is still achieved via a cast iron piston versus the more common aluminum material, which still provides higher combustion pressures and high reliability requirements.

Going further, the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) passage is also directly integrated to eliminate the EGR pipe while the engine’s EGR cooler is directly mounted to the back of the cylinder head. This design increases the allowable cylinder pressure to further handle more air injection for combustion.

Meanwhile, the alternator, cooling water pump, and fan pulley are driven by an eight-rib poly-V belt and tensioned by a hydraulic auto tensioner. Yanmar selected this hydraulic tensioner due to its high damping force which lowers the amplitude of the belt tension. This ultimately reduces belt slip, which increases the belt life as compared to friction-type tensioners.

Comprehensive Emissions Control Technology

Meeting EU Stage V and EPA Tier 4 emission regulations requires sophisticated after-treatment technology, and the 4TN107 delivers with a comprehensive emissions control system that maximizes uptime while minimizing environmental impact. The engine incorporates proprietary Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) to reduce Particulate Matter (PM), along with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system using urea water to address NOx emissions.

Importantly, these systems are designed to allow continuous operation without requiring stops for regeneration, even in challenging conditions such as high-altitude environments, low-temperature operations, or when working with varying load conditions. This design philosophy ensures that operators can maintain productivity while meeting environmental regulations.

Compact sizeIn short, the 4TN107’s wide power range, compact design, and proven reliability make it a great choice for off-road applications, providing six-cylinder power in a four-cylinder package. With Yanmar’s extensive support network backing every installation, the 4TN107 delivers superior performance, and the peace of mind that comes with choosing a proven, well-supported power solution.
